On July 26, 2023, the heavens welcomed home Jerry E. Lake of Merritt Island, FL, as he reunited with his loving parents, Forrest and Della Lake, in the warm embrace of eternity.

Jerry was born in Alma, Michigan on October 5, 1941. Then 43 years ago fate led him to meet his soul mate, Robin Balthazor-Lake, on a life-changing blind date. Their love blossomed, and together, they were blessed with two precious daughters, Destinie Gornto and Brittanie Maffeo. Jerry’s devotion to them knew no bounds, and he beamed with pride at their every accomplishment. In the early 2000’s he was overjoyed to welcome two sons-in-love Dean Gornto and Cory Maffeo.

Jerry’s pride for his family grew exponentially when he gained the title of Poppy. Peyton Maffeo, Donovan Gornto, Makenna Maffeo, Dalton Gornto, Adalynn Maffeo and Davis Gornto were the center of his world and the light in his eyes. Jerry cherished the relationships he shared with his brother Don Lake (Sandra) and sister Gloria Smith. He is also survived by Steve, Vicky, Jim, Mindy and their families. He treasured the love and support of his in-laws, mother and father-in-law DuWayne and Mary Balthazor, sister-in-law Roxanne Wendt (Thomas), and Brother-in-law James Balthazor (Susan). He was also a loving uncle to many nieces, nephews, and great-nieces and nephews, enriching their lives with his love and wisdom. He was preceded in death by his brother John Lake, Brother-in laws DuWayne Balthazor Jr. and Terrance Smith.

Not only was Jerry a wonderful father and devoted husband, but he possessed an extraordinary gift – the ability to turn friends into family. His heart was a magnet that drew people close, and he cherished the bonds he formed with those who stood by him through thick and thin.

Jerry’s life journey took him on the roads, driving a semi-truck all over the country, a path he embraced for most of his life. In 1991, Jerry and Robin made the life-changing decision to move to Florida to create a loving home and raise their family, a choice he often fondly referred to as the best decision of his life.

His generous and compassionate spirit extended beyond family and friends. Jerry was an active member of the Merritt Island Elks 2650, sponsoring numerous children to youth camps. Moreover, Jerry’s faith played a vital role in his life, and he actively served as the head usher for the 8:00 o’clock mass every Sunday at Divine Mercy Catholic Church in Merritt Island. Known for his cowboy boots and charming ties, he added his unique touch of warmth and kindness to the congregation.

As we bid farewell to Jerry, we celebrate a life fully lived, filled with love, friendship, family, and the joy of fishing. His memory will forever shine in our hearts, and we will carry his legacy of compassion, genuine friendship, and love for the simple pleasures of life in our own lives. Rest in peace, dear Jerry, knowing that your love and passion for fishing will forever inspire us to savor life’s precious moments.
