Martha J. Reid

July 22, 1922 – April 10, 2019

Martha Jean Reid died on April 10, 2019 at her residence at the Brennity Memory Care Unit in Viera. She was born on July 22, 1922 in Indianapolis, Indiana. One of eight children to Bert C and Inez (Heckathorn) Reid, the family moved from Indiana to Wayne County, Michigan in 1926.  Martha graduated from Ypsilanti High School in 1941, and from Bob Jones University in Greenville, South Carolina in 1953 with a B.A. from the School of Religion.

In 1954, she moved to Chicago, Illinois to take positions with Gideon’s International, Harvest Publications (Baptist General Conference), and eventually with the Fourth Presbyterian Church, where she held the position of Assistant Treasurer from 1968-1988 when she retired.  After retirement, Martha moved to Indian Harbour Beach, Florida. She was a member of Northshore Baptist Church in Chicago, where she sang in the choir, and was the chairperson of the Fellowshipping Ministry. She was a member of Trinity Presbyterian Church (now Trinity Wellsprings Church) in Satellite Beach, Florida, where she served in the Stewardship and Finance ministry, and volunteered in the office as a bulletin folder.

Martha enjoyed entertaining, sewing, needlepoint, travelling, walking on the beach, and celebrating milestones with her family.  Martha was a world traveller, having travelled to six of the seven continents. She made her first overseas trip in 1963.

She was preceded in death by her parents, and her siblings:  Virginia (Frank) Warner, Col. Robert Dale (Edna) Reid, Elizabeth “Bib” (Robert) Thomas, Clark Louth (Barbara) Reid, Shirley Ann (Kenneth) Moore, James Marshall (Sue) Reid, and Philip Dean (Cathy) Reid. She is survived by three sisters-in-law and one brother-in-law, Kenneth Moore of Satellite Beach, and by 17 nieces and nephews and many great- and great-great nieces and nephews. Known to her family as “Tootie”, she will be greatly missed.

A memorial service is planned for July 20, 2019 at 1pm at Trinity Wellsprings Church in Satellite Beach, Florida. Cremains will be buried at the Trinity Memorial Garden. Donations in Martha’s memory may be made to Vitas Hospice Group, 4450 West Eau Gallie Blvd, Suite 250, Melbourne, FL 32934.
