On March 23, 2023 Martha “Marty” J. (Laughlin) Chewning was called home. Marty was born the eldest child of William & Arline Laughlin on June 10, 1942 in Dennison, Ohio. Marty wouldn’t be an only child for too long for within two years she was joined by brother Bill & two years later sister Sue.
On August 3rd, 1963 Marty married the love of her life, Jim Chewning. A year later Jim & Marty welcomed a baby boy and four years later a baby girl. Their family was complete and well-travelled as Jim was in the USAF which took them all around the world. She would often talk about their home in Turkey, the wonderful shop she worked at while living in Germany and the wonderful friendships made along the way.
Marty was a wonderful artist, selfless volunteer and home to many family friends that she always made to feel welcome. Her pride and joy in her life remained her husband and two children, Todd & Jamei.
Jim & Marty worked tirelessly and happily on the genealogy of both sides of their family’s. Their hard work resulted in the publishing of the Daniel and Margaret Shuster – A Record of Their Descendants (1752-2000), a book tracing the heritage of Marty’s familial tree.
Marty is preceded in death by her husband Jim Chewning, her parents William & Arline Laughlin, brother Bill Laughlin and sister Sue Stafford.
She is survived by her son Todd (Julie) Chewning of Santa Maria, California, daughter Jamei Brown of Fort Pierce, Florida and grandson Matthew (Rowena) Brown of Great Falls, Montana, as grandparents they were influential in shaping the wonderful man he is today. She will also be greatly missed by her grandson Hunter Chewning & granddaughter McKenzie Chewning both of Santa Maria, California & sister in-law Patty Laughlin of Dennison, Ohio. She will be missed by her adored nieces Natalie Stock of New Philadelphia, Ohio, Shelby Sweeney (Matt) of New Jersey, Leslie Besozzi (Doug) of New Philadelphia, great grandson Byron and many great nieces and nephews for whom she loved dearly.
