Obituary: John Russell Michaels (1958-2023)
John Russell Michaels, a loving husband, father, and grandfather, passed away at the age of 64 on July 5, 2023, in Rockledge, FL. He leaves behind a legacy of kind heartedness, a “Michaels” (i.e., warped) sense of humor, and an unwavering love for his family.
John was born on October 28, 1958, to the late Russell and Dorothy Michaels in Lakewood, OH. He grew up in a tight-knit family, with eleven siblings : Ken (deceased), Alan (Kai), David (Pat), Glenn (Mary), Ruth (deceased), Mary (Brian) O’Shaughnessy, Joseph (Pat), Ann (Rick) Pesta, Daniel (Juliana), Eileen, and Kathleen (Phil) Smith.
In 1988, John married the love of his life Mary Beth (LaMontagne). They were blessed with four children: Lennilyn, Timothy, Catherine, and Mary, and five grandchildren: Kendalyn, Nala, Ryan, Brynlee, and Tucker.
Professionally, John enjoyed a distinguished career as a journeyman electrician. His skills and expertise were highly regarded by Boeing, McDonald Douglas, and other contractors affiliated with NASA. John’s commitment to excellence, teamwork, and meticulous attention to detail made him a trusted and invaluable asset throughout his career.
Beyond his professional achievements, John was admired for his deep faith and strength even in the face of mental illness. He had an infectious laugh and found joy in technology, music, prayer, and spending time with loved ones. He was particularly fond of Gene’s Pancakes in Cleveland, Ohio, any Cleveland sports, and Dunkin’ Coffee.
John was a volunteer for Helping Hands Food Pantry, Daily Bread Soup Kitchen, various Catholic Churches, and a member of the Knights of Columbus. He was particularly proud of his mission trip building homes in the Dominican Republic.
John will be deeply missed by his family, friends, and all who had the pleasure of knowing him. He will forever remain in the hearts of those who were fortunate enough to share in his life’s journey.
