In Loving Memory of John Esch

November 18, 1941 – January 13, 2024

On January 13, 2024, a vibrant soul bid farewell to the world. John Esch, of Melbourne, Florida, was a beloved husband, father, grandfather, and friend who left an indelible mark during his 82 years. His journey through life was marked by a deep love for family, a zest for adventure, and a passion for connecting with others.

Born on November 18, 1941, in Lansing, Michigan, to Leon and Leda Esch, John was the fourth of six siblings. His early years were spent excelling in academics and sports at Holy Cross Grade School and St. Mary’s High School. After graduating in 1959, he pursued further education at Lansing Business University. This set the stage for a remarkable 30-year career with General Motors, where he transitioned from the assembly line to a salaried position, ultimately becoming an expeditor.

John served with pride in the Army National Reserve from 1966 to 1972, demonstrating his precision as a sharpshooter. His unwavering commitment to duty reflected the elevated standards he applied to every aspect of his life.

A natural athlete, he loved playing basketball and baseball, excelling in both during his youth and high school years. John went on to play basketball for Lansing Business University and was named to a spot on the All-Star Basketball Squad. Additionally, he played baseball in the Army Reserve, later transitioning to play fast-pitch softball for Stroh’s Red Sox in the ’60s.

On March 17, 1979, John married the love of his life, Dianne. Their enduring bond spanned 45 years and was filled with laughter and love. Her favorite saying to him was “Put up your dukes!”, a phrase that never failed to ignite laughter between them. They never went to bed angry, and each day ended with both of them saying, “I love you.”

John’s retirement in February 1993 marked a new chapter in their lives, as they relocated from Michigan to Florida. While Dianne was working, John often spent time at his new “office’ – the golf course! He was an excellent golfer. Many golfers dream of being lucky enough to get 1 hole-in-one during their lifetime. John got 2 holes-in-one! They also enjoyed taking long walks on the beach, spending time at their favorite local hangouts, and making friends in their new community. John and Dianne often got together with friends to play a dice game called Farkle. As a born competitor, John enjoyed winning and would often wear his “Farkle King” t-shirt; however, he disliked losing and would jokingly complain about having to keep the “L” loser trophy until the next time they played!

John and Dianne shared a love for adventure and travel. They visited Hawaii, fell in love with it, and returned three more times. They also enjoyed adventures to many other places including Washington, D.C., Gatlinburg, TN, and cities all over the state of Florida. One of John’s favorite vacations was to New Orleans where they got to cheer on his beloved Michigan State Spartans as they played in the Sweet 16! They also took numerous cruises to tropical locations. Some of his most cherished memories were vacations spent with his daughter, son-in-law, and twin grandsons, including many visits to Disney World and a fun-filled Disney Cruise where he proudly wore a Captain Grandpa shirt on Pirate Night. His grandsons loved it!

John most certainly had what family and friends refer to as the “Esch gift of gab”! His mind was sharp, and he loved to chat about a multitude of topics including family updates, sports, weather, the stock market, politics, and more. He spent a good portion of his days making and receiving phone calls from friends and family. John never missed a single day of calling his son and daughter, who both reside in Indiana. In fact, he often called them multiple times in a day! He loved to talk about sports, especially Michigan State basketball, with his son, Jaymie, a MSU alumni. John was a loving grandpa to Ryan and Tyler, and even though they grew up in Indiana and now live in Denver he always kept in touch with them regularly through calls and texts.

Faith played a significant role in John’s life. Although health constraints limited his attendance in recent years, his last places of worship were at Church at Viera and Grace Life Church.

His canine companions were important to him and he loved them dearly. Brothers Chip and Dale have stayed behind to take care of Dianne, but his beloved girl Brandi is snuggled up with him now for eternity.
John was predeceased by his parents and siblings Lou, Gary, Gene, and Joyce. His legacy lives on through his loving wife, Dianne Esch, daughter Kristie (Kevin) Cassidy, son Jaymie Esch, grandsons Ryan and Tyler Cassidy, brother Bill Esch, sister-in-law Andrea Esch, and numerous nieces and nephews.

A Celebration of Life honoring John will take place on February 18, 2024, at 2 p.m. in the Heritage Isle Clubhouse in Viera. John lived a life filled with fun, adventure, and an unwavering love for his family and friends. He will be fondly remembered for his passion, kindness, competitive spirit, generosity, and the joy he brought to everyone lucky enough to know him.
