James (Jim) Harry Bates, age 75, passed away April 15, 2024 peacefully with his family at his side after suffering a heart attack. He was born in 1949 to Joseph and Mary Haney Bates in Washington D.C. After graduating from Cohasset High School in Massachusetts in 1966, Jim joined the US Army at age 17 and served in Germany and was honorably discharged in 1972. After serving his country, Jim attended Suffolk University in Boston earning a BA with honors in Finance in 1975. Jim moved to Florida in 1983, after the death of his father, to be near and of service to his mother. Jim married Maria Henderson in 1986 and had a long successful career working in real estate development in Brevard County.

Jim enjoyed boating, fishing, golf, reading, history and traveling the world. He was a close friend to many and a stranger to few.

Jim is survived by his former wife, Maria Henderson Bates (Satellite Beach, FL), daughter Erin Bates and grandson Cylas (Melbourne FL), son Patrick Bates (Melbourne, FL), his brothers Tom Bates (Mobile, AL) and Ed Bates (Atlanta, GA). Jim is also survived by numerous cousins, nieces, and nephews across the country who will miss his worldly experience and interesting stories. Jim was preceded in death by his father Joseph Bates Jr, his mother Mary Haney Bates, and his sister Barbara Bates Kabat.

My husband was an Army Veteran and they draped him with the American Flag as they were removing him from VITAS Hospice. We just had a wonderful experience at Island cremation with my father-in-law’s funeral. We had three meetings before the ceremony even started to make sure that everything was going to be done properly and that we’re all on the same page. Island cremation arranged for the Marines to come and do a flag honor ceremony that was an excellent touch and made the whole ceremony very memorable. The funeral home was very clean and they even had masks and hand sanitizer set out. They helped setting up our food plus supplied some of their own. Very professional and highly recommended.

I had a Celebration of Life for my husband on his birthday last Friday.

Island Cremations helped me plan for the Funeral. They have been like family. I even brought my husband’s miniature poodle.

Dillon, Mike & Dawn helped me set up and clean up. We brought in food and drinks. I had a soft jazz CD playing in the rooms. The alter had my husband’s Dolphin Urn and flowers. His picture with him holding a 52 pound Dolphin was on a projector screen above the alter.

Pastor Babington did a wonderful sermon. The family & friends spoke of memorial times.

We all thank you for your kindness and warmth for this Celebration of Life for my husband.
