David Michael Sousa (02/06/1951 – 03/07/2023)
David was born on February 6, 1951 in Toronto, Ontario, Canada to Joseph and Nora Flynn Sousa of Warwick Parish, Bermuda and County Kerry, Ireland respectively. His father was a chef and ice sculptor on the Princess Cruise line and various restaurants and golf clubs. His mother was a waitress.
He moved to Bermuda with his parents when he was two months old. His childhood was spent in the Spanish Point area of Bermuda until he was ten years old. He immigrated to the United States where he and his parents settled in Philadelphia. He spent his teen years there, where he caddied at the Merion Golf Club and other courses and played basketball in school and the city leagues at the 58th Street courts. He graduated from Saint Francis de Sales Catholic School in 1969. After high school he traveled between Bermuda, Philadelphia, Ohio and South Florida for the next five years until he settled in Fort Lauderdale. He became involved with His Place Coffee House, a Christian ministry down by the beach. It was there he later met his wife, Jaye. They moved to Bermuda for a year after they were married and then returned to Philadelphia where he graduated from deep sea diving school in Camden, New Jersey. Both his children were born in Philadelphia where they lived for four years. They then returned to Fort Lauderdale where the kids grew up. He and his wife recently moved to Tallahassee, FL in 2018.
He was a self-employed painting contractor, avid basketball player, golfer, songwriter, Bermuda kite-maker and fisherman. He loved the beach, the Smoky Mountains, and traveling around the United States. He also enjoyed renovating his primary residences, as well as, two vacation homes in Gatlinburg, TN and Cocoa, FL. He devoted much of his time to his wife and the raising of his two children, six grandchildren and numerous dogs, grand-dogs and cats. He was a member of Thomasville Road Baptist Church.
He is survived by his wife of 44 years, Norma Jean (Jaye) Sousa, his son Cole Michael Sousa, his daughter Gail Anne Wade, and his six grandchildren: Noah, Noelle, and Layla Sousa, as well as, Maya, Elijah and Kayla Wade.
