Chuck learned at an early age from his mother the art of making desserts and became an expert at making pies and cakes, especially the ever tricky perfect pie crust. Everyone loved his pumpkin chiffon, apple, German chocolate and raspberry swirl pies, his carrot cake, baked Alaskas, and walnut Budapest cake. But his most memorable was probably a disastrous chocolate pie one Thanksgiving, which he promptly covered with a mountain of whipped cream and served as “Chocolate Mess,” much to the delight of all, especially his little nieces.

Charles Henry Drummond III of Cocoa Beach, Florida, passed away on August 8, 2021 at age 76. He was born on August 24, 1944 in Greensboro, NC to the late Charles and Evelyn (Meeker) Drummond. He was a brilliant student and earned bachelor and masters degrees in Ceramic Engineering from The Ohio State University. He continued on to receive his Ph.D. in Applied Physics from Harvard University.

It was at Harvard that he was introduced to long-distance bicycling, mountain climbing, and choral singing, which all became his lifelong passions. A gifted baritone, he sang over the years with the Boston Symphony Chorus, the Tanglewood Festival Chorus, the Columbus Symphony Chorus (including their Carnegie Hall debut), Columbus Opera Chorus, and the Paris Choral Society. He was also a dedicated member of many church choirs.

Chuck returned to OSU to become a professor of Glass Science in the Ceramic Engineering and Material Science Departments for 36 years. He also served the entire time as the Director of the Annual Conference on Glass Problems.

Beloved by his students, Chuck was honored with the Outstanding Teaching Award by the students of the College of Engineering. He especially enjoyed teaching the freshman course which took new engineers to a selection of industrial plants to show them the practical aspects of the career they were choosing. When they were graduated, many, many students cited this as the most important course they had taken. Although his glass courses were usually upper level electives, they were among the most popular in the Department.

An inveterate traveler, Chuck visited with his partner Rob all 50 state Capitols and made 8 complete round-the-world trips. He especially loved France as well as Greece, Spain, and Bali.

He is survived by loving partner of 45 years Robert Crackel, sister Carolyn (John) Hightower, brother James (Linda) Drummond, and numerous nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents and brother John.
