To everything there is a season and a time for every purpose under heaven… Verna Gravina Mellone, 90, was called Home, on Sunday, June 6, 2021, while surrounded by the love of her family. Surely she was greeted at heaven’s gate by the Good Lord saying, “Well done my good and faithful servant.” She is now in heaven, with her Lord and Savior Jesus Christ, and is wonderfully healthy and basking in His Heavenly Sonlight!
Verna’s priorities were always faith, family and friends. The light of the Lord shinned through Verna in everything she did. She was kind, compassionate, loving and patient beyond words. No harsh words were ever spoken.
Verna was preceded in death and has now been reunited with her husband, her one and only love, Jim. Now she is able to hold, rock and sing to her babies and grandbabies whom have only been held by Heavenly arms. Verna has also been reunited with her parents, Vincenzo and Angelina; sisters Carmela (Johnny), Josephine (Sonny) and Zanetta (Al); daughter-in-law Donna, and goddaughter Linda. Her precious, furry, constant companion, Lilly Marlane led the way to heaven just six days earlier.
Jim’s “sweetest girl in the whole, wide world, his darling angel, Verna,” is survived by their six children: Barbara (Peter) Anderson, Diane (John) Holinda, Jane (Michael) Kendrick, James (Tammy) Mellone, Jr., Michael Mellone, Lawrence (Joanna) Mellone and daughter-in-love, Kimberly Jones. Verna was a loving and amazing Grandma who is already missed by her 17 grandchildren: Melissa (Brad) Turner, Joshua Holinda, M. Joseph (Susan) Kendrick, Jennifer (Brad) Kalsow, Michele Platt, Marianne Mellone, Andrew (Rebecca) Anderson, Michael Mellone, Jr., James (Joana) Mellone, Shannon Mellone, Matthew (Ann Michele) Mellone, Zachere Mellone, Luciano Mellone, Randolph Mellone, Mason Mellone, Caisadee Mellone and Joshua Jarrell. “G.G.” also leaves 11 great-grandchildren: M. Joseph Kendrick, Jr., Amber Kendrick, Emily Platt, Jacob Turner, Abigail Kendrick, John Platt, III, Lucy Anderson, Noah Kendrick, Averie Mellone, Gabriella Anderson and Hudson Mellone. Verna is also survived by many nieces and nephews, who she loved so dearly!
In 1970 Verna and Jim moved their family from New York to Merritt Island, which she considered to be one of the best things they ever did. She quickly learned about football and became a Miami Dolphins fan for life! Verna was also loyal to her “Cubbies” and was thrilled when they won the 2016 World Series. She was a supportive fan of whatever any of her children, grandchildren or great- grandchildren were involved in, although, she would honestly say that she still didn’t understand all the soccer rules. Verna loved swimming, whether in the canal, the ocean or the pool. She would load up all her children and spend the day at the beach. Years later she would do the same with her grandchildren, making many visits to Cherie Down. Verna was an amazing cook…no recipes required. It didn’t matter if she prepared a simple lunch or a St. Mary’s lasagna dinner for hundreds, all meals were wonderfully delicious.
Verna was blessed by so many people in her life: all of the wonderful women of the Knights of Columbus Ladies Auxiliary Council 6125; her sisters/friends in the prayer group she was a member of for over forty years; Lynda, who so lovingly brought Holy Communion to her; Jenn R., who always added a little extra Christmas cheer to her by bringing the children year after year to sing Christmas Carrols; and too many others to mention. All of your cards, notes, telephone chats and visits, especially during the last few years, meant more to Verna than you will ever know. Her family cherishes each of you for the love and friendship you shared with her throughout the years. Most importantly, we thank you for all of your prayers!
Last, but certainly not least, Verna leaves behind a group of amazing ladies who helped care for her and Lilly: Dotrell, Dee, Maggie, Peggy, Shayna and Susan. You all are amazing and Verna loved you so! The family cannot thank you enough!
Special thanks to Vitas Hospice Team 1812, especially to nurses Angie, Jared and Paige.
