Mary Jane Bird Duffield went to be with her Heavenly Father on Thursday, December 4, 2025 while walking to the beach to take pictures of the moonrise at Canova Park in Indian Harbour Beach, FL. Her husband, James “Jim” Paul Duffield, the love of her life, whom she married after their high school graduations in 1961, was by her side as she passed. They had just experienced their last sunset together.
Mary graduated from St. Albans High School in St. Albans, WV and was Fun In The Sun Queen at Zora Ann Modeling. She graduated from Capital City College with a degree in data processing and raised three children. In the 1970’s Mary worked at Capital Builders in Charleston, WV, was a hostess at Bob Evans in South Charleston, WV, and worked for Fred Haddad at Heck’s Main Office in the Kanawha Valley of WV. She also helped to manage rental property that Jim owned in South Charleston.
In the 1980’s Mary worked with her daughters at Baskin Robbins Ice Cream in the St. Albans Mall, where she later went to work at Watson’s. Mary was helpful to her daughter and son in businesses they managed. In the late 1980’s Mary moved with Jim to Pt. Marion, PA and cleaned sorority houses at WVU. Following those years, Mary returned to St. Albans and made her home on Strawberry Road. She traveled with PIMMS and was the greeting card lady at many retail stores. Finally, she worked for Putnam Aging and assisted many residents in the Kanawha Valley with end-of-life care.
Mary instilled in her children a strong sense of independence. She was very active and loved kayaking, music, concerts, cruises, dancing and taking care of pets, especially her cat, Smokey. She is survived by her husband, James P. Duffield; son, James P. Duffield II of Alaska; daughters, Lynn Wise (Bill) of South Carolina, and Angie Roundtree (Mike) of Florida; and 7 grandchildren and 3 great-grandchildren.
Arrangements are forthcoming.
