Martha Patrick Wells, 94, of Rockledge, Florida, passed away on Sunday, January 15, 2023, after a long battle with kidney disease.
Martha was born on November 23, 1928, to Hubert and Francis Patrick in Athens, Georgia. She graduated from Greensboro Senior High School in 1945. After graduation, Martha worked in retail sales in the greater Greensboro area.
While spending weekends in Myrtle Beach, SC, she met a handsome beach lifeguard who would soon become her husband. Henry and Martha were wed in Greensboro, NC, in 1950 and had two children, Patrick and Shirley. In 1958, Martha moved to Cocoa, FL, to be with Henry where he was managing the family’s furniture business.
With the birth of her children Martha became a dedicated and wonderful mother and wife. She excelled at supporting her husband’s developing business and raising two bright and active children. In addition, her mother, Francis, moved in with them after the death of her husband and she cared for her until Francis’ own passing in 1978. Martha was a loving Grandmother and supported her grandchildren through their many passions and difficulties, as well. She was proud of her family and enjoyed telling friends about their efforts and activities.
Martha was an enthusiastic Bridge player, book club member, and friend to her neighbors. She was also passionate about her church, Cocoa Presbyterian. She was a member of the Women’s Circle where she made many lasting friends. Martha stayed connected with the church, even in the later stages of her life when it wasn’t possible to attend in person. Martha will be missed greatly.
Martha is survived by her son, Pat Wells (Lisa Durham) of Merritt Island, FL, and daughter, Shirley (Scott) Funk of Plant City, FL; her two grandchildren Jennie (Michael) Mealor and Emily Funk (Tim Martin); and her four great-grandchildren Evelyn Grace, Addie Helen, and Wells Michael Bryan Mealor, and John Scott Martin. She is preceded in death by her husband Henry, and her grandson, Bryan (Elizabeth) Funk.
There will be a memorial service for Martha at Cocoa Presbyterian Church on January 28, 2023, at 11:00 a.m. She will be interred with her husband, Henry, at the Cape Canaveral National Cemetery at a later date.
