JERRY G. LONG
22 NOV 1933 ~ 1 MAR 2023
Absent from the body, present with the Lord! Jerry entered the presence of our loving Savior on 1 March 2023 with his loving wife,
JoAnne being so honored to hold his hands in hers as he slipped into eternity. He had been ill for several months, but his death was
unexpected.
Jerry was born in Connersville, IN to Alfred West and Lillian Gabbard Long. He graduated from Connersville High School and studied
with the Moody Bible Institute for many years and was a lay Pastor. He served in the Vietnam War as a Chaplain’s Assistant in
Yokohama, Japan. His primary duties and ones he enjoyed most were with the choir and as youth pastor.
Jerry had a lifelong love for God, family, and music. He most enjoyed quartets and was able to enjoy the blending of voices most
while in Japan with the choir. He studied voice throughout his school years and paid for his lessons by detailing cars, mowing lawns and training to
be manager of Danner stores that were so popular in the 1950’s. He and his choir and youth group enjoyed one another’s friendship and he
continued to be honored by their remembrances and visits for many years thereafter back in the states. In 1956 when his enlisted time ended, he was given a reception and presented with a beautiful album of pictures of the many happy occasions they had shared during his tenure. He was honorably
discharged in July 1956. One of his happiest memories was being instrumental in bringing Billy Graham and several members of his team,
visiting in Japan at that time, to the Yokohama Chapel for dinner and fellowship.
He joined the Fire Department in Columbus, Indiana where he worked until his retirement in 1978. He was always very proud to have
been a fireman and taking all the training opportunities available. After his retirement from the Fire Department he worked at Cummins
Engine, Inc. in security. Upon his retiring from Cummins Engine Company, Inc., he and JoAnne relocated to Florida where they have
enjoyed living near the space center and attending the launches and traveling many places in their beloved, adopted state of Florida.
He and JoAnne Walker were united in marriage June 1954 at the First Baptist Church by Reverend Oren Anderson. They have enjoyed
68-years together and would have been 69 in June 2023.
Survivors to cherish his memory are his wife and soul mate, JoAnne, daughters, Sarah Elizabeth Long and Cynthia Clarke, three granddaughters,
Elizabeth Anne (Steve) Kuhn, Catherine (Kyle) East and Jennifer Lynne Clarke and one great grandchild, Great-Grandson, Landon East,
age 11, and many friends. Special family friends are Margo & Myrl Anderson, Hedda & Lonnie Dixon and Paul & Pauline Brooks.
