Jack Harding Thomas, Jr. born on January 18, 1955 was welcomed into heaven on January 2, 2023 by his father, Jack Harding Thomas, Sr., his mother Rosa Nell Stacks Thomas and his sister Jacquelyn Nell Thomas Bowman. His sudden passing at the age of 67 has left his husband Tony Shubert shocked and deeply saddened. Also mourning his loss are his niece Katie Rose Bowman, his mother-in-law Carol Shubert and various friends and family.
Jack was born in San Diego, California and moved with his family at the age of three to Alabama. His love of animals was evident when as a young boy he grew up around his father’s farm where horses were being trained. Soon thereafter, Jack began riding and showing horses. Once he graduated from Brewer High School in 1973, it was a natural progression for him to begin working fulltime with his father in the horse training business.
A true love affair when the first Arabian horse arrived at the barn. Jack found them so splendid the farm became an Arabian training facility. Over the following 40 years, Jack worked daily with the stately animals, receiving National, Reserved National, and numerous top 10 awards for horses he had trained.
Half way through his work with Arabians, Jack became a judge for the Arabian Horse Association and was honored to have judged the US National Championships and Youth Nationals Championships. He also was honored to have judged the Scottsdale Arabian show on several occasions , The Buckeye, National Show Horse finals, and the Houston Livestock Show. In addition to judging numerous US competitions, he also judged internationally at the Canadian National Championship and in Sydney Australia’s East Coast Championship.
Always a spiritual man, Jack became involved with St. John’s Episcopal Church in Decatur. He and Tony loved their church family and Jack went on to serve two terms on the Vestry. No matter where they lived, Jack and Tony always looked to become part of a church family, but St. John’s was always special to them.
In 2015 Jack decided daily horse rides were taking a toll on his body and retired from the horse business. He took a job with Goble-Fite Lumber Company in Decatur and began life in retail. A few years later he changed careers again when he followed Tony’s career to Memphis and the famous Peabody Hotel. Jack was well known and well thought of throughout the hotel having won Front of the House Employee of the year in 2017.
Again following Tony, in May of 2022 they made their final home together in Heathrow, FL where he took a job as Food and Beverage Supervisor at Marriott Hotel at Lake Mary.
Everywhere Jack went, he made lifelong friends. A memorial service in his honor will be held on January 28, 2023 at 1 p.m. CST at St. John’s Episcopal Church, 202 Gordon Dr. SE, Decatur, AL. In lieu of flowers, the family has requested donations be made to St. John’s in Jack’s memory.
