A celebration of life will be held in the Villages at La Hacienda Recreation Center, 1200 Avenida Central, Ladylake, FL 32159 from 12:30 p.m. to 3:30 p.m. on Sunday, November 20, 2022. Since George was a “cookie monster,” in lieu of flowers, the family wishes for a dozen cookies to be brought to the celebration of life, or if you are unable to attend, please eat a cookie or two in his honor.

George Michael Rodriguez passed away on Sunday, October 30, 2022 at Cape Canaveral Hospital from Congestive Heart Failure. He was 86 years old and lived a full and happy life. He is preceded in death by his wife, June Rodriguez, who passed on February 21, 2022 and stepson Michael Urbanowski who passed in 2003. He is survived by his four children Georlene Armitage and husband Bob, Milene Smith, Ronald Rodriguez and wife Neena, Tom Rodriguez and wife Tina, and stepson David Urbanowski and wife Carol. He had 7 grandchildren, 5 step grandchildren, and 21 great grandchildren.
George was born in Havana, Cuba in 1935 where he lived until he was 8 years old. He immigrated to the United States in 1943 and became a US Citizen in 1953. He was proud of his heritage and proud to be a citizen of the United States. He graduated from Libby High School in 1955 where he was offered several football scholarships, including Ohio State University, which he turned down to start a family. He moved his family from Toledo, Ohio to the Gainesville, FL area in 1967. George retired from the U.S. Post Office where he also spent many years as an officer in the Post Office Union, but his true love was sports. He spent many years as an official for high school basketball and football and was very active playing softball. When he retired to the Villages 25 years ago, he played golf and was proud to pitch for a number of senior softball teams. He would point to where he would hit the ball, like Babe Ruth, and hit it over the fence in that spot. In 2004, his team won the Florida Senior Games State Championship and went on to play in the National Senior Championship in Las Vegas.
