Reverend Dr. Ernest Edward Bortner, Jr., 91, of Satellite Beach, passed away peacefully in the presence of loved ones on May 25, 2022. His life was dedicated to service for God and for the wellbeing of his wife, family and others.

Ernest was born in Baltimore, MD and grew up with his sister Audrey. As a teen, Ernest enjoyed serving in various leadership positions in the Methodist Youth Fellowship. His involvement in MYF planted a seed in his life that eventually lead him toward ministry. Ernest did not take the thought of being a minister lightly and he wanted to experience some kind of “call” or assurance that he was heading in the right direction. As his high school days neared completion he wondered about college and an idea came to him… He applied to one college from the perspective of wanting to be an engineer and applied to another college with ministry in mind. The plan worked out differently than anticipated. He was accepted to Johns Hopkins School of Engineering, but not the liberal arts college. During his studies at Johns Hopkins the call to ministry was consistently on his mind and finally in his last year of engineering he had a talk with the dean who worked out studies that would prepare him for both seminary and graduation from the college of engineering. God works all things together for good and coincidentally his first two appointments in the United Methodist Church involved building programs in line with his engineering studies.

During Ernest’s 70-year career in ministry he served in the Baltimore-Washington Conference at Epworth Methodist Church, Corkran Memorial UMC, Centre Street UMC, Bel Air UMC, Colesville UMC, Ferndale UMC, Asbury Methodist Village, Montgomery UMC, Ashton UMC and work at St. Mark’s UMC of Indialantic, FL for over 20 years.

Ernest is survived by his loving and devoted wife Martha of 66 years, his daughter Lorraine LaBelle, his son Edward Bortner (wife Darlene); his grandchildren James Norris (wife Maria), Chris Norris (wife Allison), Lindsey Lovelett (husband Ryan), Krista Bortner; his great grandchildren Shauna Norris, Veronica Norris, Camden Lovelett, Nolan Lovelett, Bailey Norris, Zoey Norris; his sister Audrey Alderson, his nieces Jeannette Delster (husband Dave) and Kim Mason (husband Robert) and his nephew Robert Alderson (wife Linda).

Ernest is also survived by the countless people who blessed him during his life and those whom he served.
